Should I Serve Googlebot Content Only Pages Optimized for Load Speed?

Matt Cutts: The answer to your question is, noooooooo and if I could reach through the screen and hit the escape key and CTRL C and Break I would because that’s cloaking. You never want to do something completely different for googlebot than you’d do for regular users. That’s the definition of cloaking.

If you have something in your code saying, “If user agent equals Googlebot or if the IP address  is Google, do something different” then that’s the mere definition of cloaking. So you might think the page load speed is a factor I should care about so let’s make things faster for Googlebot, but that is not the right approach. Read the rest of this entry »

How Important Is the Frequency of Updates on a Blog?

Matt Cutts: Content is much more important that the frequency of updating. If you’re thinking about posting for people then frequency might be a nice thing to have. If you show up on a blog everyday and it’s never been updated and you’re a person, then maybe you don’t show up every single day. Maybe you show up once a week instead.

So people have noted that the more often you post the more you and the more you have fresh content to the degree where sometimes some megablogs will have a new post every few hours so that any time you show up during the day you’ll have something new to read. That’s fantastic for users. Users like to see something different, not just the same static content whenever they show up. Read the rest of this entry »

How Do You Protect Your Blog from Hackers?

Matt Cutts: That’s a very good question and the fact is that since Word Press is so popular and so widespread it is subject to a lot more attempts by hackers, especially people that have figured out that there are old versions of Word Press that are a little easier to exploit.

So the very first thing that I do is try to make sure that I always have my server patch up-to-date. You want to be running the latest version. I think as of this video that is 2.9.2, but already they’re testing out version 3.0.  I’m sure that will have a lot more security as well.

The other big thing that I do is to change the HT access file, .htaccess, which is in wp-admin and you can basically say, you know what only a small number of IP addresses, the ones that I basically whitelist out explicitly are allowed to access my wp-admin directory. Read the rest of this entry »

Are You Going to do Another 30 Day Challenge?

Matt Cutts: Yes. I love 30 day challenges. For those who haven’t heard a 30 day challenge is just something very simple that you can come up with, and you say “I’m going to try to do something for 30 days” like walking 10,000 a day. Or maybe you’re going to bike into work every day, or give up caffeine, or giving up Microsoft Operating systems, or give up your iPhone, or not answer external email for 30 days.

These are all different things that I have tried. They are all a lot of fun. The hardest one frankly was giving up sugar for 30 days. I think human beings are wired to like sugar so that was hard to do. Right now I’m in the middle of trying 30 days without FaceBook to see how that works. I’m trying a lot of different things. I have a lot of fun ideas. Read the rest of this entry »

What’s Your Take on AddOn Domains?

Matt Cutts: Well first off let’s talk about what addon domains are because a lot of people haven’t heard that term before.

Suppose I have this site, mattcutts.com. An addon domain might be something that your webhost would offer you where it’s basically related; maybe it’s all part of the package deal where you can get matt-cutts.com. Typically an addon domain might have a connotation of being a separate site.

So, let’s talk through this a little bit. Suppose for example I have mattcutts.com. Maybe I also want to register a matt-cutts.com. My personal advice would be rather than developing those as separate sites I would actually make matt-cutts.com redirect to mattcutts.com.

The reason is that when you’ve got things that are really, really close, maybe only a hyphen is different or maybe mattcutts.net. Read the rest of this entry »

How Much Traffic Do You Think is Generated by Marketers Searching for Their Own Target Keywords?

Matt Cutts: Real interesting question.  I think it probably is not all that much and I’ll give you a reason or two for that.

Number one, take a look at how many people follow me or Danny Sullivan on Twitter or people that subscribe to my blog; the numbers that you end up with are about 50,000. So 50,000 people follow Danny, about 50,000 people follow me, about 50,000 people read my blog.

So what’s that telling me is whether you look at any popular blog, SEO related there are 50, maybe 100,000 people that are interested in the SEO aspect of things, but compared to the millions and millions and millions of people who are searching every day that’s still a relatively small percentage.
