In this edition of the Affiliate Buzz podcast, James Martell, successful publisher, speaker and author talks with his special guest Don Campbell from Expand2Web.com about the steps he took to take his newsletter opt-in rate from 1% to 12% by really focusing in on 4 key components of building his list.

Ryan Alis, founder of www.iContact.com, shared his inside statistic during an earlier interview by disclosing you will never see 70% of the visitors to your website again if you don’t capture their name and email. This was a reality Don was seeing on his own site and new it was time to makes some changes.

Expand2Web.com is designed to help businesses make the decision to expand to the internet by providing tips and resources to small business owners across the globe. After hearing about the power of newsletters Don joined www.aWeber.com and added the opt-in form to his pages. While he was receiving a couple of subscribers he really didn’t know how to make it hot and enticing to his visitors.

In his efforts to increase his opt-in rate he worked with James to determine what key components he was missing on his site. Don recognized right away that he needed to put his efforts not only into his homepage but also his landing page, creating an enticing offer for his visitors to join and improve his thank you page.

To improve his landing page Don created a little video that is about 1 minute long that walks the viewer through these items and ends with a strong call to action to click the link below to download a free e-book. Previously the page existed with less than 1% opt-in rate and after putting his efforts into this page alone it increased to 12% by focusing more on benefits, features and what people will get out of it and adding a video that.

While coming up with an enticing offer Don shares he originally made the mistake of writing a 50 page e-book that simply wasn’t converting well. Imagine his surprise when he realized he only needed a few pages to offer quality information to his visitor and a well written headline to get their attention. The next step, creating a professional e-book cover.

Creating the cover for the e-book is equally important in the process of building your list. James shares two mistakes he sees people make so often is cheap out on the cover and it looks cheezy and the words are too small. He shares a couple of his favorite websites below for having professional covers created for your optin offer with those being www.killercovers.com and www.trustycovers.com. Both offer pricing that affordable so no one should cheap out on the cover.

Don shares he plans to continue testing his pages and has set a goal of a 22% opt-in rate for his subscribers. After using the key components to bring it up to 12% he feels confident to continue improving the little things such as headline variations and slight changes to his page copy.
