Welcome to another edition of The Affiliate Buzz, where affiliate marketers have been coming to be inspired, informed and motivated to succeed since way back in 2003. Arlene is away playing with the grandkids, but James is joined by serial entrepreneur, Desmond Soon.
Desmond has spent a third of his life in Singapore, a third in Canada and a third in Japan. He was always interested in being an entrepreneur and confesses to James about his first business venture when he was growing up in Vancouver. It’s not something he’s proud of now, but it did start him down the road to becoming a successful entrepreneur and business coach. His experience includes work in both online and brick and mortar businesses and he has worked in both Asia and North America. Desmond is known for “turning setbacks into comebacks”. When he’s not coaching, attending speaking engagements or working on his own business, he enjoys spending time with his two boys, thus the term “fatherpreneur”.
Do What You Do Best and Outsource the Rest
In keeping with his beliefs about learning from and being mentored by successful individuals, he approached James to learn about outsourcing. Desmond knows he needs help. But he’s resisted and procrastinated hiring online. He confesses that the main obstacle for him has been fear of the unknown.
James, on the other hand, is big believer in outsourcing. He recently wrote a book Outsourcing Essentials for Podcasters - The Secrets to Hiring Talent on a Beach Hut Budget. James recommends that podcasters and online business owners follow his 15 minute rule- if you can’t do it yourself in 15 minutes, then spend the next 15 minutes creating a job post so you can hire someone to do it.
James will direct Desmond to a platform that offers over 10 million service providers waiting to be hired. He’ll also learn exactly how to go about creating a job post, how the payment system works and how inexpensive it can be to hire your virtual dream team.
Listen now to hear James’ answers to Desmond’s questions about:
- Why people resist outsourcing
- How to Hire a Virtual Assistant
- Which platforms to use
- The difference between BaseCamp, Upwork and Fiverr
- How to decide who to hire and not get cheated
- How to track and report outsourcing expenses
- What types of jobs can be outsourced
- How much you should expect to pay
- Which are best done by native English speakers and which can be outsourced to a freelancer anywhere
The Most Important Person You’ll Ever Hire
After getting a feel for how outsourcing works, Desmond hones in on the big question. Does he need a Virtual Assistant? What can a VA do? How much does one cost?
Of course, he needs a VA! Every entrepreneur needs a VA (and perhaps every person needs a VA). James will describe how the talented VAs he’s hired become the backbone of his business, managing his projects, his team members and even him.
Finally, he tells Desmond what three things he (and you) can do to get started right away.
