Affiliate marketing is not a new concept, but it has enjoyed a huge surge in popularity over the past few years. Thanks to widespread Internet access and one-click WordPress installers, anyone can set up an affiliate website. This means that competition in the affiliate marketing space is fierce. Only a small percentage of affiliate marketers actually make a decent living out of their sites. These tips will help you to become one of those successful affiliates.
1. Choose an interesting niche
One mistake that novice affiliate marketers make is trying to pick too broad of a niche. They decide that they will sell “books” or “video games”, or, worse, they sign up for every affiliate program that their chosen network offers in the hopes of making a lot of money quickly. This strategy doesn’t work.
It’s hard to start a successful website about books, because if someone wants a book they’ll go to Amazon.com – however, if you were to set up a site devoted to vampires and werewolves, and promoted scary books and movies related to that subject, you’d have a fighting chance at creating a community. It helps if you know a lot about the niche you’re going to work in, too.
2. Put content first
When you’re building your affiliate website, focus on content first. Users don’t like to feel like they’re being sold to. Produce some interesting, informative content and save the monetization until you have a decent audience.
Continuing the previous example, you could write blog posts about the latest horror films, review some of the newest scary books or create a discussion about famous vampire and werewolf folk stories. This’ll make your site look and feel better, and generate some more visits and trust for it.
3. Use calls to action
Remember that monetizing your users means more than simply cluttering up your website with banner ads. Most regular internet users are ad-blind, or have an ad-blocker to hide advertisements for them. Instead of littering your site with ads, write about the products that you like, and use calls to action to encourage people to check those products out.
This’ll also feel far more natural and legitimate, which will likely make people more willing to click and buy.
4. Build your mailing list
Don’t rely on passing traffic to make money out of your affiliate program. Create a mailing list and offer people an incentive to join it. That incentive could be a free ebook, some money off coupons, or an entry into a prize draw. Get people to sign up, provide them with some great content via email, and start pre-selling to those customers, gradually.
5. Don’t over-sell to your list
It’s true that your mailing list is the thing that will make you money, but you shouldn’t go over-board trying to sell to your subscribers. Pre-post a steady stream of informative emails that do not include sales pitches. Insert the occasional pre-sales pitch into those mails, and then send the occasional sales pitch. For example, you could send out a series of “Get great abs for summer” emails, and at the end of that series, send a mail promoting a super-food or fat burning supplement. If your users liked and appreciated your informative mails then they’ll be more receptive to the sales pitch.
If you try over-selling to your mailing list, you might soon find the number of people subscribed to your list quickly dropping – and that, clearly, is not something that you want.
6. Invest in web design
If you want your visitors to trust your website, you need to make it look professional, clean and modern. Avoid pixelated, cheap looking clip-art, well-known stock photos and free themes.
WordPress is a platform often chosen to run an affiliate site from as it allows you to set up an easy to use website incredibly easily, fully enabling you to customise it to suit you and your product through different themes and options.
Professional or bespoke themes can add an extra layer to your site design and help to sell your product much more effectively, while avoiding it from looking the same as any other WordPress site using the same free theme. If you can’t afford to buy a professional looking theme for your site, at the very least take the time to customize the free theme you decide to use.
7. Cross sell within your own site
If you find that you’re getting a lot of traffic to certain pages, but people aren’t staying on your site, do something about it! Make it easy for your visitors to see what you have to offer. Prominently display links (or even ad-style buttons) inviting users to check out your other ebooks, your discount codes, or other related products. If you’re using WordPress, install a related posts plugin to help with this. The longer people stay on your site, the more likely they are to buy something.
Follow this advice and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a successful affiliate marketer – but the rest comes down to you.
