Coffee Talk with Paula Carnegoy and Wanda Sowden

How to make money online? How to build traffic to websites/Internet business? How to rank your site at the top of the search engine result pages (SERPs)? Well, if these are the questions popping up in your mind, here is what the industry experts have to say.

Starting with content writing and back linking, entering into constructing web pages and now building websites, Paula & Wanda can be called as the giants of affiliate marketing. Sharing their experience with James Martell over a cup of coffee, here is a guide they recommend for the beginners in affiliate marketing.

When asked about the secret of their success, Paula discloses “Focus on one site and comprehend a few pages at a time rather than handling 4-5 websites together helps you improve the quality of your job. Use PAD for distributing articles. Create a nice article; add 2-3 links to the merchant and its ready to be published”. “We started with content writing and once we got good amount of job in hand, we started giving away articles to content writers saving our time to invest in constructing web pages”, Wanda added.

It's more than obvious that attending international conferences like the Affiliates Summit helps a lot in networking as you get to meet a lot a of people and improve your business. “To make $10,000 a month, it takes only one website, to be precise - 3 pages.”

Collecting content, gathering the back links and increasing the traffic on the website are only a part of the job. The content needs to be creative, informative and attractive enough so that after reading the review, you should ensure that the reader can go straight to in this case the Amazon site rather than clicking the sidebars and get distracted.

The key to capture the reader’s attention is not just listing down all the features of a product, but focusing on each feature and discussing its pros and cons. Paula and Wanda developed a design, layout and methodology to construct a review. Once they used this format, they found a huge response compared to the previous short quickly written reviews. “People need information and a bit of details to make up their mind to buy a product. Short reviews don't cut it”, says Wanda.

For the beginners, here are steps to success as suggested by Paula & Wanda:

  • Start with one website; focus on 5 articles/product reviews.
  • 5 is an easy number that allows your creativity to flow evenly among all the reviews and also gives you an opportunity to work with variety of articles. Beyond 5 might be stressful.
  • Picking the right product is a critical decision which is based on the price and the popularity of the product.
  • Build content focusing more on quality rather than quantity.

For example: the commission for a product costing $150 would be decent enough to start with. Products that everyone loves to buy are also a good choice.

  1. Dave Flask says:

Awesome interview! I was totally inspired after listening to your Coffee Talk interview with Paula and Wanda. There are no more excuses out there for anyone who is considering working full time as an affiliate marketer. Paula and Wanda debunk alot of the myths out there. They reveal what it takes to get a page ranked, how many pages it takes to earn good money, what to spend your time on and more. The best part is how straight forward their approach is in doing all of the above. The 30 minute interview was the best time investment I made this year!

  2. Lloyd Burrell says:

    Hi James
I have listened to the interview and immediately went and bought the ebook, I couldn't resist. Both are EXCELLENT. What I like about the Paula and Wanda method is the apparent absolute simplicity of it - Twitter, Facebook, social media, are not necessary to make money but the backlinking is. I'm not on any commission here, but I can say if you are interested in getting into affiliate marketing this is a great place to start.

  3. Dan Maynard says:

Great interview. And it is great to hear from friends Paula and Wanda about their success.

  4. Danny says:

    Hi James,

Thanks for doing with this interview with Paula and Wanda. Very informative! It has forced me to become very focused, and I will now concentrate on 'quality articles' and 'backlinking.' I'm definitely going to purchase their e-book.

  5. Don Campbell says:

Wow, what an outstanding interview. Thanks Paula and Wanda for sharing the details of what worked for you. I was super inspired after listening to this! Now I have to keep reminding myself - "work on one site!"

    • James Martell says:

Hey Don, it's was great chatting with you today. It is great to hear you got a little inspiration from the interview. I am sure the ladies will enjoy hearing that as well.

  6. Jane Warren says:

Great interview! I had already bought the ebook, and have implemented your recommendations on my current site. I am making some sales already, during the off-season of my product!
Thanks so much for your help...

    • James Martell says:

Hi Jane, that's great to hear. I have already had a look at one of the reviews on your site. It was about a waterproof camera. I assume you structure that review after following Paula and Wanda's formula?

  7. Tom Holmes says:

Awesome interview...Got a lot out of it. Reinforced the the fact that Back links rule!

    Thanks again,

  8. Jonathan (in New Zealand) says:

    Hey James!

One correction in the above write-up "Long reviews bore them”, says Wanda.

I don't think that's what Wanda was saying... I think she was saying that was what she thought, while in actuality long reviews really work so long as they're done the right way.

I listened to this one from the first email you sent out. Hate to admit it, but while I always work on quality, my motivations and leanings as of late have been toward quantity.

I have never done a professional link-building campaign, and our sites still get great traffic, presumably because we produce quality content. But I would like to have phenomenal traffic, and this seems like a great way to go about it.

I am SO excited after listening to this review to go out and use the PAD method to really aggressively pull in back links to specific product reviews.

It just made me think, why the heck haven't I been making this a regular part of what I do online since 2001?

But almost 10 years later is as good of a time as any to start.

And focusing on 1-3 sites and a few products sounds way better than the 10 sites I'm trying to work on right now.

We'll see if I can keep focused to 1-3, but anyway, I'm really excited to really give it a go and see what we have added to the bottom line in 3-6 months from now, by focusing on a few products.

Thank-you for doing this interview James!

  9. Ateeq khan says:

Great words! James, really nice interview and amazing thing in this interview is that 'needs to wait almost 3 months before seeing amazing results'. and after hard work there will be great return. Nice keep it up James.

  10. Robert says:

Paula and Wanda's blog was mentioned. What is the URL to their personal blog? ;-) Thanks

  11. Stan Horst says:

This was the most amazing interview ever! Talk about encouragement for those of us who are plodding along, doing the work and not yet seeing results. Hang in there, fellow plodders. We'll get there yet!

  12. Jane Warren says:

    Hi James:
Yes - the review on the waterproof camera was based on the formula provided by Wanda & Paula. I'm glad to say that it has been working for me so far. Thanks again for the interview!

    Take care,

  13. Aaron Schulman says:

    Hi James,

This is the second or third time I have listened to this interview with Paula and Wanda and I am sure it makes you feel good to know that your work has helped create other successful Affiliate Marketers as well as the successful "process information" that your students can publish bringing more know-how and value to the entire industry. While listening to this early this morning (I was actually drinking my morning coffee while listening to coffee talk - go figure) I couldn't help but look Paula and Wanda up online and found one of their blog posts that outlines in detail how they write their reviews for products on Amazon - hope it is ok to post here but might make it easier for others to find in the future - it also has a link to their report on Amazonian Profits. . .

Thanks for this interview as it was one of those inspiring interviews like Bronwyn Bambers quite a while back. As in all of your interviews, you share a lot of real "know-how" and not just fluff and that is certainly one of the keys to building a solid following! Hope you and Arlene and the kids are staying warm up there above the fish bowl! (We've had 2 sources of heat running in our home this month)

  14. Nikhil says:

Excellent interview. It's always great lo listen to people without "guru fame". I have learned many things from Paula and Wanda.
