James Martell, president of Net Guides Publishing Inc., interviews with Lisa Riolo a co-founder of Impact Radius (http://impactradius.com) who really points out how understanding the business from the advertiser’s point of view is essential if you want to make the most of your affiliate experience.

Not only can understanding how your advertiser sees the industry help you negotiate for better commissions on each sale, it can help you learn what type of value you need to showcase in order to get into the good programs and receive the type of one-on-one assistance from your affiliate manager that will really put you ahead of your competition.

Lisa Riolo really understands the affiliate industry from the “back” side. She started with CJ years ago but has recently built her own hybrid affiliate network (Impact Radius) from the ground up in response to feedback from both affiliates, whom she calls media partners, and advertisers.

Minimizing the role of the agency middleman (or in this case, woman) her company allows affiliates to push back against advertisers to get better commissions and better support but also allows advertisers to go out and find the top-tier affiliates that will get them the best results.

Not only is this Coffee Talk an excellent prep course for anybody curious about just what affiliate marketing is and how it works, it really goes into detail about how the business has evolved from a simple agreement between website owners to a multi-billion dollar industry.

Inside you’ll learn:

	* The 5 main types of affiliate models (and how advertisers view each)
	* Why advertisers and affiliates are better off working with third party tracking and payment companies (even if they don’t want to)
	* What sort of capital and time investment goes into getting an advertiser’s affiliate program off the ground (it’s eye-opening to most affiliates and even top-level company management!)
	* Why even a beginner affiliate has the right to be respected by an advertiser (here’s a hint: they could be a diamond in the rough)
	* How the industry is changing in response to participant feedback and popular demand

There’s tons more inside--James has really hit the jackpot here with Lisa. She’s an excellent resource for beginners and experts alike (you’ll get her personal email inside as well.) So sit back and listen in as they not only explore the lesser-known aspects of affiliate marketing but introduce you to the future of the industry. This edition of Coffee Talk with James Martell is best enjoyed with a pen and paper handy—you’ll want to take notes.

James Martell, expert affiliate, trainer, and president of Net Guides Publishing Inc., has been attending the West Coast Affiliate Summit for years—having spoken at his share as well—so in preparation for Affiliate Summit 2010 in The Big Apple, James sat down with co-founder Shawn Collins to discuss what makes Affiliate Summit the premiere event for affiliates from all walks of life. Whether you’re an expert looking to rub elbows with some of the industry’s best or an amateur looking to score that one all-important “Nugget” of information that will shift your success into high gear, Affiliate Summit is simply a must-do.

The conference has grown from just a handful of affiliate and merchants a few years ago to over 4,000 attendees—so how can you know what to expect? What sessions to attend? Who to search out? And what to do while you’re in New York City for the long weekend?

Have a listen to this edition of Coffee Talk with James Martell. He’s speaking this year (presenting on one of his favorite and most valuable topics: outsourcing (http://jamesmartell.com/elance)) and took this opportunity to “grill” Shawn about just what Affiliate Summit (http://jamesmartell.com/affiliatesummit) 2010 has in store.

To start with, there will be roughly 75 speakers over the course of three days in at the gorgeous Hilton hotel in the heart of the Big Apple. If that isn’t enough, you’ll also find:

	* The Exhibit Hall—with two floors of booths, the exhibit hall is the place to be if you want to find representatives from the most lucrative affiliate programs in the business—or them to find you. Take the opportunity to make new acquaintances or renew old friendships while finding out what’s hot in affiliate marketing this year . . . and what’s not.
	* The Meat Market—a smaller version of the Exhibit Hall where large and small merchant as well as successful affiliates have set up tables so you can network, ask questions, and negotiate better deals that you could via email or over the phone.
	* World-Class Speakers—Keynote addresses from Frank Luntz (http://www.affiliatesummit.com/frank-luntz/) (political commentator and author of “Words That Work”—the psychology of how words influence people) and Jim Kukral (http://www.jimkukral.com/) (former Affiliate Summit MC and author of “Attention: this Book Will Make You Money”) will definitely fill up fast but there are tons of other presentations from industry experts like:

	* Jay Berkowitz (http://www.tengoldenrules.com/) (James’s friend and marketing consultant)
	* Chris Pearson (http://diythemes.com/) (creator of the Thesis Wordpress theme)
	* and Jen Goode (http://www.jgoodedesigns.com/) (founder of Jen Goode Designs)

Shawn will also explain the 4 different pass levels, how they work, and how you can enter for your chance to win a Free Gold Pass worth over $400!

James and Shawn also share their favorite “touristy” things to do in New York City so you can bookend your business with a little “Breakation!”

Whether you’ve been to Affiliate Summit (http://jamesmartell.com/affiliatesummit) a dozen times or you’re just now finding out about it and wondering if you should attend, you’ll love the unique perspective this Coffee Talk gives you on the premiere affiliate marketing conference in the US. So sit back, listen, and learn as James Martell brings you another great podcast.</itunes:summary>

James Martell, president of Net Guides Publishing Inc., often jokes that he’s been in the affiliate business since “The Caveman Days” of the internet but when he recently spoke with Matt McWilliams (an award winning affiliate manager who boosted HomeTownQuotes.com’s affiliate business 1000% in the first year) he learned that everything old is new again. Indeed, some tips locked away in a dusty old textbook from 2001 could reenergize your traffic, conversions, and commissions.

James and Arlene used some of these same techniques that Matt discusses in this edition of Coffee Talk, and were able to increase some of their site’s conversion rates from ½ of a percent to 8% almost overnight!

Now the chief affiliate manager of Legacy Learning (http://www.learnandmaster.com/affiliates/), Matt has won too many awards to list here but they include Affiliate Summits 2010 Affiliate Manager of the Year. His recent article in FeedFront sparked a lively discussion between he and James about the merits of old school internet techniques and how some of them are more important today than they were in the nineties.

You wouldn’t believe it but the ten tips he dug out of an old cardboard box could mean the difference between wasting your time and making a profit.

Here’s just a sample of what you’ll find inside:

	* Build a support system—affiliate marketing shouldn’t be a “lonely venture”
	* Analyze your sales—know how, what, when, and why so you can do it again.
	* Be accessible to customers—you don’t like getting the run around, neither do they.
	* Provide Value—those cheap 200 word posts aren’t going to cut it, create good content!
	* Keep the language correct—nobody will buy when they can’t understand what you’re selling.
	* Keep it simple—your page may look good to you, but does it to your prospects?

This is just the tip of the iceberg as James and Matt get down to the bottom of these 10 tips to boost your traffic, conversions, and commissions.

You’ll also find out what Matt is up to now. Here’s a hint, he’s offering educational training courses in music, the arts, and even ballroom dancing! Listen in and learn how you can get in on the action. (You’ll even get Matt’s direct telephone number so you can get a jump start promoting his in-demand products.)

James has always been a firm believer of keeping things simple. He’s told his students for years that it’s the basic techniques that they learn that will either make them or break them in the affiliate industry—no matter what new fangled technology or “trick” promises to revolutionize the business. So sit back and prepare to get an education in olde tyme tactics that work better now than they did then. This edition of Coffee Talk with James Martell is definitely a keeper.

James Martell, President of Net Guides Publishing Inc., has been a successful affiliate and affiliate trainer since "The Caveman Days" of internet marketing. He's seen it grow and change and knows that some of the things that held true back then are just as important today. He discusses this with Lisa Riolo in this edition of Coffee Talk. She’s was one of the women who literally help mold the affiliate marketing industry into what it is today.

Now one of the founders of Impact Radius (http://impactradius.com), a hybrid next-generation affiliate network for on and offline performance based marketing, she was Commission Junction’s Vice President of Business Development from 2001 to 2006. Drawing on her experience, she explains how "everything old is new again." Now more than ever creating a successful affiliate business (for both affiliate publishers and advertisers) is about driving qualified customers via the creation of great, meaningful content not just mindless traffic.

From this starting point, Lisa explains to James:

	* How you can learn to negotiate better commission rates with your advertisers
	* How to get accepted into "hot" or profitable affiliate programs (Hint: don’t let rejection get you down!)
	* How to overcome the Chicken vs. Egg phenomenon when you’re trying to lure a potential advertiser to your new website or even website idea
	* How to showcase the value you bring to any advertiser—even if your even if your sales figures are smaller than the big boys
	* How—if you’re an advertiser—you can build a profitable commission based sales force without sacrificing your brand’s "image"—and how to avoid the pitfalls
	* Why every business should consider performance-based marketing—even ones that don’t fit the traditional “model”

She also chats with James and tells him how his tactics—even when he was just beginning in the business—caused her to sit up and take notice of his efforts before she’d ever met him.

This is really an exciting look at affiliate marketing from its early years right on through the fast-paced and extremely lucrative times we’re living in today from two industry experts. Lisa is truly one of affiliate marketing’s most knowledgeable resources and James is thrilled to bring her to you. All you have to do is listen in.</itunes:summary>

James Martell, president of Net Guides Publishing Inc., has been a successful affiliate and affiliate trainer for a decade and if anyone understands the true freedom (both financial and personal) that the business offers those willing to put in the time and effort, it’s him. James is no stranger to travel and his “job” has given him opportunities to visit dozens of exotic locations and take dozens more not-so-exotic family vacations with his wife Arlene and their kids.

And his story is not unique. Affiliate marketing is built for those who love to travel: no ties to an office, tons of free time, and a steady stream of residual income! That’s why James asked Jonathan Kraft to sit down and chat about how his affiliate career has radically changed his life.

Jonathan and his wife Carrie, both successful affiliates who started small, are currently on an extended tour of South America—extended as in seven months and counting! Brought together by a love of travel and other cultures, they only just recently broke ties with “the real world” and left on their grand adventure—all thanks to the freedom and residual income of their affiliate business.

Listen in as James and Jonathan talk about:

	* How Jonathan got started in the business with handmade Geocities websites in 2001 (slow and steady does actually win the race!)
	* How he and his wife built a steady, strong incoming flow of cash from his current websites
	* What exactly went into planning this remarkable Once-In-A-Lifetime journey
	* How it is possible for anybody—even you—to follow in his footsteps
	* And even how he’s currently building an affiliate site around his passion—travel! (What’s your passion?)

If you love to travel, or if you just like to experience different cultures, the two also spend a great deal of time recounting the sites and experience Jonathan has encountered on his tour including:

	* Jonathan's heart-warming stint at a turtle rescue program in the Costa Rican jungle
	* The breathtaking adventure he had among Mayan ruins at Tikal
	* The life-changing opportunity to learn a foreign language in a country that speaks it
	* The fun of adapting cooking ingredients to come up with exciting new combinations

But traveling the world (http://carrieandjonathan.com/) is just one of the opportunities an affiliate lifestyle affords. Jonathan suggests using your free time for whatever makes you happy: hobbies, volunteering, and family time--whatever makes you happy!

If you’ve been wondering just what an affiliate business can do for you or if you’re in the business and struggling to find the motivation to push past your own personal roadblocks, this Coffee Talk is a must! Listen to Jonathan’s inspirational story and learn how you can truly live your life by earning more and working less!</itunes:summary>

In his quest to bring better understanding to the affiliate marketing industry, James Martell, successful affiliate marketer and President of Net Guides Publishing, Inc., has a coffee talk with Madeleine McGregor, who is the Affiliate Manager for CSN Stores, the third largest online retailer of home goods in the U.S.

Being that both Madeleine and James attended the ShareASale Think Tank (http://jamesmartell.com/industry-events/shareasale-think-tank-2009-newport-beach-california-video/) in Newport Beach last year, they were able to share some great opinions of what they experienced. As the head of the Affiliate Marketing department, Madeleine attended as a Merchant while James saw things through the eyes of an affiliate marketer. Both felt that the hotel was stunning and the networking was exceptional with all the sessions that were offered. As a business experience Madeleine felt that the Newport Beach ShareASale Think Tank was one of the best that she had ever had. Madeleine and James spoke about the unusual but fantastic set up for Merchants and Affiliates to meet. The merchants each had their own cabanas which were placed all around the large circular pool. She said that affiliates signed up for 20 minute slots and that it had gotten dark out before the last affiliate left.

James was able to speak to Madeleine about her business background. After graduation from college, and applying for several jobs that just didn’t pay enough, she had a friend working with CSN Stores.

After beginning in customer service, Madeleine progressed to the role of Trainer. In this position, she developed a unique Week One program, compulsory for all new employees. During this time, Madeleine trained +400 employees and ran more than 50 training classes, and created material that is still in use today. Her dedication to this role and program spurred the creation of the formalized Training and Development Department at CSN. At this point, she shared that she really wanted to move on into the sales area, but when a position opened up in the Advertising Department in the summer of 2008, she moved into that position and began working on the Affiliate Marketing team, which she now manages. Her background includes time spent in the AmeriCorps program, City Year, living abroad, and a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts in Psychology and Spanish.

James and Madeleine spoke about many subjects that would be interesting to any affiliate marketer or anyone wanting to become one. Some of the subjects they chatted about were:

	* What products CSN will be adding soon
	* Tax laws changed in the Industry and what they learned for affiliates
	* CSN online shopping boutiques via online websites
	* There are over a million products at CSN

Madeleine is so very interested in working with affiliates and she refers to them many times as “her affiliates”. She wants to help them with their websites and maintain good relationships with them. She feels it is so important to get to know each affiliate that wants to work with her.

	* The Holiday season is upon us, how this affects the CSN Stores and the Affiliate Programs growth
	* Micro-sites for desktop shopping
	* Affiliate newsletters for bargains etc important to keep in touch with your customers
	* Telephone orders

James discusses auto-subscribing and the different ways that customers might want to be on a list for a free report on particular items that they have purchased and then follow up with that with another email contact. Especially if they are in a shopping mood.

Madeleine discusses some of the marketing techniques with typing codes into orders and how it tracks the affiliate orders for CSN Stores.

This huge and successful internet store has managed to secure a popular spot on customer desktops within the last few years.</itunes:summary>
