Do What You Do Best and Outsource the Rest

The Internet is full of wanna-be entrepreneurs. For every successful affiliate marketer, there are several who never make a dime. In fact, many lose money on their failed attempts to create an online business. Those who fail usually fall into two categories; those who try to do everything themselves and those who never start due to the fear of not knowing how to do everything.

These common mistakes are a major reason most people fail to build successful online businesses. Are you a procrastinator? Do you beat yourself up for not knowing how to do things? Maybe you wish you had more time to build your online business, or wish you could be more productive and that your business was growing faster. Maybe you wish there was someone working on your business while you sleep.

We have all heard the adage “if you need something done, give it to a busy person.” Many people would love to create a successful online business but feel they lack the time, lack the knowledge, or just plain procrastinate. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Arlene Martell, my wife of 24 years, is a perfect example of someone who avoided the common mistakes, overcame the time and knowledge challenges and created a successful, income-generating website. As a busy mother of four teenage children, Arlene wears many hats. Whether it is cook, taxi driver or maid, she is a very busy and dedicated mother. On top of all this, she helps me run our successful online business.

Despite her many duties, Arlene was passionate about creating a site about epilepsy to provide a resource for other moms and caregivers to help deal with children suffering from epilepsy. Specifically, she wanted to get the word out about the Ketogenic Diet, a special diet that helped our son Adam eliminate seizures and avoid the damaging drugs he was taking.

As a busy mother, she took my advice and decided to outsource much of the necessary work to create her site. Outsourcing is simply hiring someone else to do some or all of the work that you either don’t know how to do, or don’t have the time to do. Outsourcing also allows you to focus on the things you enjoy doing and are good at doing. You can be more productive and get more work done by paying someone to do the tasks that are a challenge to you. This also allows you to accomplish more in a shorter amount of time with less effort on your part.

When it came to creating content for her site, Arlene knew she needed hire someone to do the writing. She also knew that she needed to find someone that could capture her voice and help put her words to the page so that it represented her site appropriately.

As a big fan of outsourcing myself, I have outsourced nearly 200 projects. From article writing to audio and video production, I have used freelancers to produce much of the content for my many sites. I helped Arlene understand the importance of focusing on the tasks that you are good at and enjoy doing, and then outsource the rest of the work. Outsourcing is surprisingly affordable, and it also eliminates your learning curve by hiring a professional. When it comes to content, if you are not a professional writer do NOT pretend to be one. Stop procrastinating and get someone else to do the work for you.

The Internet offers individuals an unprecedented opportunity to start their own online business. It allows people to start in their spare time, learn as they go, and provides tools and services to assist in building a profitable business. Outsourcing your content needs is one of the easiest and most affordable ways the Internet can help assist you in building your business.

A great place to outsource professional writers to create your content is on With over 100,000 service providers in writing, design, web support and even legal services, Elance provides a quality service that connects businesses that need to outsource some of their work with professional service providers that can get the work done, usually better and faster. Elance facilitates the entire process, from hiring to payment, offering a safe and secure way to get your work done.

Finding a writer on Elance is as simple as posting a project in the appropriate category. For writing, there is a Writing & Translation category. Post your project there and professional writers will bid on your project. You get to review their portfolios and see what other buyers think of their work through Elance’s feedback system. After hiring a writer you pay your money to Elance in a no-risk process, and then you release the money to the writer when the project is complete.

The writers are great and Elance provides them a way to do what they love while working from the comfort of their own home. This creates a true win/win for everyone. When it came to Arlene’s site, she hired a writer to create content for her home page, about the editor, contact us and privacy policy pages. She also knew that she needed to keep the site fresh with daily content, so she hired writers to add three articles a week. She even provided the writers with their own username and password so they could add the content to the site themselves. Arlene only had to provide oversight.

When Arlene posted her first project on Elance she was looking to have content for the first 11 pages of her website created. Ten writers bid on her project, seven from North America and three from India or Southeast Asia, and the average bid was $293, which worked out to $26.63 per page.

Arlene ended up choosing a writer named Julie, partly based on what she wrote on her bid. Julie wrote:

“Hi Arlene,

I would be more than happy to write your content for your website as I come from a family of physicians and medical practitioners.

I write regularly for a variety of websites and have access to up to date medical information. I would be available by phone or via the free Skype internet phone service.

I can complete your 11 pages within 2 weeks for $275. I can also assist you with any other projects such as blog posts and press releases. I have 12 years of sales experience and 4 years of freelance writing experience.

I have attached some medical writing samples to demonstrate my style.

A week later, Julie had completed the project and Arlene was thrilled with the results as you can see by the comments she sent to Julie afterward.

“Hi Julie,

It was scary for me to post a project and not know exactly what I was going to get back.

I have to tell you that I am absolutely thrilled with the pages you sent me. They are exactly what I am looking for - I can hardly believe it! There are very, very minor changes that I will do when I upload them to the site.

You really captured the feeling that I was after and I am so glad that I picked you to do the writing. I could not possibly have created this myself so I thank you for your talents. I have released the escrow money into your account.

Thank you so much.

Since that first project, Arlene has gone on to post a number of other projects using Elance, and the result is over 500 pages of content creating a great site with a lot of visitors, a chat forum, and she even created her own epilepsy podcast, but that is a different story.

The bottom line is that if you are interested in creating your own successful online business, consider finding your own “busy person” by outsourcing tasks to inexpensive professionals to perform those things you can’t or don’t want to do. Stop the procrastination and start creating that successful online business today.
