Google SEO Tip #53 – Is PageRank Calculated Differently for Domains Registered Before 2004?

Matt Cutts: That is completely false. There is absolutely no difference between 2004 domains, 2005 domains, 2006 domains; they all acquire reputation in the same way.
There is literally no value to getting a pre-2004 domain or pre-Google IPO domain or whatever conspiracy theory you want to spew out. Please we have enough crazy SEO theories going on without new ones.
So no there’s no difference what so ever. Get a domain that works and works well for you and do not worry about whether it was created before 2004.

My personal opinion is not to be focused on PageRank. Instead, focus on creating the kinds of posts that provide the most value to your readers, attracting all of the traffic and social reactions as possible, as those are the factors that truly a blog successful.

Hi Kristi,
I do agree that the focus should not be on PageRank but on the factors you’ve outlined which help to attract the right types of links into the page which in turn produces the PageRank.
I have also found that PageRank is a little tough to monitor these days anyways with the long delays by Google between updates. If I were to pay attention to it it would drive me crazy. Instead I’d rather go about developing content that deserves attention (and backlinks).

I’m with you and Kristi on this one. You’ll drive yourself nuts focusing on PageRank and trying to figure out the ever changing algorithms used by Google.
I believe that giving your readers the information they are seeking and solutions to their problems, as well as building backlinks, will give you the results you are looking for.

I remember back in the 2003/2004 era I spent a lot of time focused on PageRank. It seemed to be the thing to do at the time. Not anymore.
